First time users: Please start by creating a parent account and then add other household members. This will allow you to register yourself and your family members for many of our programs, leagues, and events now and in the future.

Online registrations will allow you to register and pay for these things without needing to call or come by the Ottawa Recreation Commission. We will continue to take registrations in person if that’s what you prefer.

Late registrations: Please contact us at 785-242-1939 if you would like to register after the final deadline. Late registrations will only be accepted if there are openings within the desired program. Late registrations will not be accepted if teams or programs are at capacity.

Our Background

Vision Statement

The Ottawa Recreation Commission strives to provide quality experiences through inspiring recreation programs that improve overall wellbeing for the Ottawa community, one program and person at a time.

Mission Statement

The Ottawa Recreation Commission exists to improve the overall quality of life through well designed, inclusive recreation programs and facilities in partnership with the Ottawa School District and City of Ottawa.

About Us

The Ottawa Recreation Commission (ORC) was established in 1947, as provided in the Kansas Statutes under Article 19 of Chapter 12. According to this statute, the Commission is governed by a volunteer five-member, policy-setting, board comprised of two appointees from the City of Ottawa, two from USD 290 and one at-large position appointed by the four previously mentioned members. Commissioners, by law, are not paid and volunteer their time to represent the community.

The Ottawa Recreation Commission is primarily funded through property tax mills levied by USD 290. Programs are supported by individual registrations, user fees, sponsorships and donations.

We provide essential quality of life services through recreation programs such as: fitness and wellness programs, youth/teen/senior programs, youth and adult sports, and community special events. The ORC partners with the City of Ottawa and USD 290 to operate recreation programs using properties and facilities of each entity.

Board of Commissioners

The Ottawa Recreation Commission is an autonomous governmental body comprised of a 5-member volunteer Board of Commissioners. Board Members are responsible for representing the interests of the agencies in which they are appointed. The City of Ottawa Commission appoints two members, the USD 290 Board of Education appoints two members, and the four previously mentioned elect a single member-at-large to represent the interests of the local community as a whole. ORC Board Members, by law, are not paid, and volunteer their time to represent the community. The ORC Board of Commissioners meet monthly, and are responsible for establishing the written policies, rules and regulations which govern ORC property, operations, programs, and safety.

The Commission has the authority to hire an Executive Director to oversee the daily operations and functions of the organization on their behalf. The Executive Director assumes full responsibility for overseeing staff, programs, facilities, and the finances of the organization as well as upholding the policies and procedures established by the Board.
